15th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Authority over unclean spirits

Jesus sent His disciples out with authority over unclean spirits.
What did that mean?

Were they performing exorcisms everywhere they went?
Like in the movie the Exorcist or the Omen?
I don’t think so.
So what were they doing expelling “unclean spirits?”

An “Unclean Spirit”
Is a hurt we can’t let go of.
And anger that rages day and night.
A lust that burns;
A depression that won’t go away.
A guilt that we carry around.
A past that continues to haunt us.
A spirit of negativity complaining about everything.

Unclean spirits are everywhere.
Looking for hearts in which to reside.
And they are legion
many people suffer from them.

So Jesus sent His disciples with no food, or sack or money,
Because if one wants to be free from unclean spirits,
Then one must not be weighed down by material things.

For How can one’s spirit fly, when it is weighed down by the things of this earth?

We begin Mass by calling to mind our sins.
Not so that we can feel guilty,
But so that we can “shake it off.”
And not carry it around anymore.

In Confession our sins are washed away.
We get rid of our unclean spirit and get a clean heart instead.

Jesus gives us the means to get rid of Unclean Spirits,
If only we would use them.

What is weighing down our spirits?
Shake it off!
Shake off even the dust of it that may be on our feet.

For It is not worth carrying around!
