Oscar Wilde the great Irish author once said;
“ The only difference between the saint and the sinner is that every saint has a past,
and every sinner has a future.”
Every saint and every sinner has a similar past.
King David committed adultery and murder;
St. Peter denied the Lord in His hour of need.
St. Paul was complicit in the murder of Stephen
St. Matthew was a tax collector who extorted people.
St. Augustine Prayed, “Lord make me chaste but not yet.”
Everyone has a past with mistakes and regrets.
This is why Jesus said, “Those who put their hand to the plow and look back;
Are not fit for the Kingdom of God. “Lk:9:62
While sinners keep looking back;
Longing for what they left behind.
Saints, leave the past behind.
And look to the future.
For many people however, the problem is not the past or the future;
But the mediocrity of the present.
Bishop Sheen once said,
“One step beyond mediocrity and we are saved.”
Medicoctrty does not care about the past or the future.
Medicocrity does not like change.
So Mediocrity settles;
Settles for average;
Settles for what everyone else is doing;
Settles for being Good instead of striving to be Holy!
The ultimate difference therefore between a saint and a sinner,
Is that sinners settle;
Saints never do.
