12th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Who are we to question God?

How can God allow suffering?
Why doesn’t God do something?
Where is God?
Some people even question the existence of God.
Everyone questions God.

Yet who are we to question God?

Job had everything and then lost everything.
He was rich beyond compare.
Beautiful wife and children.
Good health.
He was the envy of everyone.

And then he lost it all.
Thieves stole his riches.
A storm collapsed his house killing all of his children in it.
And he came down with terrible sores and boils all over his body.

And he wondered,
“Why me?”
I did everything I was supposed to.
I led a good life and never cheated anyone
And kept all of the commandments.

Why did this happen to me?

So he began to question God.

And God answered by saying,
Where were you when the world began?
Did you place the stars in the sky?
Did you fill the oceans with water
And form the mountains?
Who consulted you when all this was being done?

And where will you be when a million years from now
When the stars go out.
And the oceans dry up
And the mountains crumble to the sea?

And Job fell silent.
He became speechless.

Who are we to question God?
What if God started questioning us?

Would we hold up under the scrutiny?
Who of us would stand?

Everyone has questions,
But sometimes the answers are not always evident.

This is where Faith comes in.
But we need the Faith of a child
Not the cynicism of an adult.

When the storm came up,
The disciples became afraid.
They forgot who made the wind and the waves.

Jesus asked them where was their Faith??

Faith is never overcome by the Storms and the Questions
Of life.

Those Who have Faith,
Remain calm,
For they know even the wind and waves will obey
The One Who made them.

God bless
Fr. Patrick
