4th Sunday of Lent

Appearances. Sam. 16:11-13

Do not be fooled!
Many things are not what they appear to be.

The Lord told Samuel to go to Bethlehem
To the House of Jesse to anoint the new King of Israel
To take Saul’s place.

But Jesse had 8 sons.
How would he know which one to anoint?

The first one was tall and handsome,
And Samuel thought surely this is the one.
But he was not.

Then he looked at the other sons,
Some were strong, some were smart,
But none of them would be king.

Instead it was David who had been tending sheep.
Who would be King.
David was tending sheep not because he was the tallest, or the strongest or the smartest;
Those kind of people don’t tend sheep.

But God saw something in David;
Something beyond what most people see.
Because God looks into the heart.
For it is in the heart that the true character of a person is revealed.

One should never judge a book by its cover
And one should never judge a person by their appearance.
The content of a book and a person
can only be judged by what is inside.

But only God can see what is in our heart.

Many people come do not come to church because
They don’t see a reason.

Thats just it…….they don’t see.

They see words on a page,
But they don’t see God’s handwriting.

They see bread,
But they do not see the Body of Christ.

They see an altar,
But they do not see the thousands of angels surrounding it.

Our Eyes are limited as to what they can see.
But Faith sees the hand of God and angel wings.

When you come up for Communion,
Don’t let your eyes fool you.

What appears to be bread
Is really the Body of Christ
That hung on the cross
And that rose from the dead

And that is more Real than anything this world appears to have.
