18th Sunday ordinary time

Vanity Ecclesiastes 1:2-23

Some people come to church one hour a week;

say their prayers

And then go off to “whatever.”

And Qoheleth tells us “whatever” is in vain

For Qoheleth, “Whatever” was

work; wine; women; wealth; pleasure; power,

“Whatever!

And when he attained Whatever he wanted;

He found that what he wanted wasn’t what he wanted after all;

It did not satisfy or fulfill him.

What he was chasing was all in vain;

All his labor; all his sweat; all of his sleepless nights worrying

Was in vain!

For at the end of the day;

After the sun has set on our life;

“Whatever” we wanted,  we will no longer need.

St. Paul tells us instead to set our hearts on the things that are above Col. 3:1

By setting our hearts on what is above;

Then “whatever” we do in this world will not be in vain;

For we will not have been working for earthly treasures

But Heavenly ones;

For what God wants.

And “Whatever” God wants.

Is never in Vain;

For what God wants is us!
