2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

Servants of the Lord Is. 49:3-6

Isaiah the prophet said that God formed him in the womb to be His servant.
who will bring Israel back from exile in Babylon.
Who will restore the house of Jacob from whom the Messiah will come.
Who will raise up the tribes of Jacob.

But not just Israel or Jacob,
But Isaiah will be a light to all the nations of the earth;

So that they may know the salvation that God offers.
Just look around at world and one can see it needs saving.

God formed us in the womb to be His servants.

But Do you ever think of yourself as being a servant of the Lord?
Yet that is what we are.

At first that may sound demeaning.
After all servants do not do what they want
But what they are told.

A servant sets aside his or her own will,
To do the will of another.

An obedient servant accomplishes much
While a willful servant accomplishes little.

If Isaiah is a servant
And Jesus Himself came not to be served but to serve.

Are we better than Jesus or Isaiah?

What kind of servant therefore are we supposed to be?
What does God ask of us?

First of all to serve our family.
Not just how we can be of help in the family,
But how can we really serve others when they need it.

Secondly to serve our parish.
Not just give something in the collection;
But give some time in prayer or helping out in the parish.

And if Isaiah came not only to bring back the house of Jacob
But all of the nations.

We are called to serve our city.
To serve Minonk, Wenona, Toluca, Lostant.

To get involved in some little way to make the city in which we live,
Just a little bit better.

When we serve others in our family, our parish and our city,
Is when we are most like Jesus;

Who came not to be served but to serve.
