After the death of Pope Sixtus, the Emperor of Rome demanded that Lawrence the deacon of Rome, within 3 days. turn over the riches of the Church.
He worked feverishly to distribute as much Church property to as possible, so as to prevent it being seized by the Emperor.
On the third day, he presented to to the emperor, the indigent, the crippled, the blind, and the suffering, and declared that these were the true treasures of the Church.
This act led directly to his martyrdom.
Our greatest riches therefore before God and the world,
Are our sufferings and our crosses and our poverty.
With these the riches of the Kingdom of Heaven will be ours.
